Prosthesis and Prosthetic

Prosthetic: An artificial substitute or replacement of a part of the body such as a tooth, eye, a facial bone, the palate, a hip, a knee or another joint, the leg, an arm, etc. A prosthesis is designed for functional or cosmetic reasons or both.



An orthosis is the correct term for an externally applied device that is designed and fitted to the body to achieve one or more of the following goals:

* Control biomechanical alignment
* Correct or accommodate deformity
* Protect and support an injury
* Assist rehabilitation
* Reduce pain
* Increase mobility
* Increase independence
